Durability and biological susceptibility of wood and derivatives

Ever wondered why your hardwood floors can stand the test of time and the onslaught of termites?

Today, we had the honor of stepping into the realm of LNEC – Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, I.P. – Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, Portugal’s esteemed public institute for Science and Technology. In their UPB Lab (Prevention of Biodeterioration Laboratory), they undertake rigorous research into the biological durability and susceptibility of bio-based materials, particularly wood and wood-based products.

Our guide in this first journey, Drª. Marta Duarte showed us two of our walk-in chambers at work at UPB! These chambers were setting the environmental conditions necessary for critical tests like the CEN/TS 15083-1 (2005) and EN117 (2013).

These tests are key to understanding how wood materials will resist over time and against natural enemies such as wood-destroying fungi and termites.

A hearty thanks to the amazing Drª Marta Duarte and the Lab Coordinator Drª Lina Nunes for giving us a peek into this fascinating world of real-life testing applications for our chambers. Your work beautifully showcases the vast potential of Aralab’s contribution to diverse research fields.
