Following up on our last week’s trip to Évora, we are now at ICAAM (Institute of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences from Évora University) where we visited the Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Laboratory.
Focused on Plant Biotechnology and Plant Improvement since 1992, this department has been especially dedicated to the study of aspects related to in vitro culture and improvement of woody and shrubby species.
In 2018, a spinoff was created – DespertaFolia (https://despertafolia.pt/) – dedicated to plant research and production, and providing services in plant biotechnology. Currently the main focus is the Walnut (Juglans regia L.) that we can observe here. A very special thanks to Professor Augusto Peixe for letting us inside the lab and showing us the many stages of the Walnut plant breeding and development!
